What I Wear for Winter Running + Weekly Training

cold running gear with icicles on eyesHappy Valentine’s Day! For the first time this winter, it got really really cold this weekend! I had to rearrange all my weekend runs and actually managed to get in most of the mileage. I did my long run (28k) on Friday instead of Sunday because it was forecast to be around -20C (-4F) and Friday was a balmy -10C (14F).

I was dreading doing my long run after work on Friday but it ended up being a really nice, not too cold run and then it got out of the way before the weekend. I even got to sleep in on Saturday!

I always have trouble about what to wear on really cold runs because I hate being cold but also don’t want to get too hot and sweat and then get cold. I think I finally have it figured out for the most part.

Here is what I wore on Friday:

Layer one – long underwear pants and long sleeve shirt

Layer two – a pair of pants that will stop the wind, double layer socks and a running sweater with a hood

Layer three – wind breaker on the top, thick mittens, face mask and a hat

When it gets colder, like this morning when I ran the trails in -40C (-40F) weather, I add an extra thin pair of gloves in my mittens, a technical long sleeve on top of the long underwear shirt, merino wool underwear and shorts in between my long underwear and outer pants to keep my butt warmer.

It’s a long weekend here so after a lot of braving the cold to run this weekend, I’m excited to just relax tomorrow.

Training this week:
Monday – rest
Tuesday – 45 minute bootcamp + 10km
Wednesday – 20km + yin yoga
Thursday – rest
Friday – 28km (long run)
Saturday – 12km
Sunday – 10km trail run

    Getting some great runs in! I was going to merrily wade in telling you about what I wear when it gets ‘really’ cold. But my gloves in my -1C ‘cold’ weather seem pretty feeble! Massive superhero points getting out there when it’s so cold 🙂

      Thanks! -1 being as cold as it gets sounds like a great problem to have even if it doesn’t lend to lots of advice on wearing all the clothes you own to go running!

    Great week of training! When it was -2F on Saturday, I wore smartwool long underware / wind blocking pants on the bottom and two wool shirts (one long sleeve and one short sleeve) plus my running jacket on the top. I topped it off with gloves and a hat. I didn’t have anything on my face, and it felt cold. I should look into a mask …

      Congrats on getting out when it was that cold! It sounds like you wore just what I did, it’s all about the layers. The face mask I have does the job but isn’t great, I’m hoping not to need it much more this year (might be wishful thinking…)
